What Metal Is Approved For Investing Inside Of An IRA?

Investing in gold and silver is a great alternative investment with a Self Directed IRA, also known as a precious metals IRA.  By investing in gold and silver you are investing is a physical asset that you can feel and touch.  In addition, gold and silver are great investment options to hedge against inflation or the devaluation of the dollar.

Those investing in gold or silver or even both with their self directed IRA need to know that there are only certain types of gold and silver that are approved for investing inside an IRA. Below are some examples of metals that are IRS approved for investing inside of an IRA.  

Gold Approved for IRAs

  • American Eagle coins
  • Australian Kangaroo/Nugget coins
  • Austrian Philharmonic coins
  • Canadian Maple Leaf coins
  • Credit Suisse – Pamp Suisse Bars .999
  • U.S. Buffalo Gold Uncirculated coins (no Proofs)
  • Bars and rounds manufactured by a NYMEX or COMEX approved refiner/assayer or national government mint and meeting minimum fineness requirements

Silver approved for IRAs

  • American Eagle coins
  • Australian Kangaroo/Nugget coins
  • Austrian Philharmonic coins
  • Canadian Maple Leaf coins
  • Mexican Libertad coins
  • Bars and rounds manufactured by a NYMEX or COMEX approved refiner/assayer or national government mint and meeting minimum fineness requirements

Platinum approved for an IRA

  • American Eagle coins
  • Australian Kangaroo/Nugget coins
  • Austrian Philharmonic coins
  • Canadian Maple Leaf coins
  • Isle of Man Noble coins
  • Bars and rounds manufactured by a NYMEX or COMEX approved refiner/assayer or national government mint and meeting minimum fineness requirements

Palladium approved for IRAs

  • Bars and rounds manufactured by a NYMEX or COMEX approved refiner/assayer or national government mint and meeting minimum fineness requirements

When investing in any of these types of metals inside of your IRA there are also some other things that you must remember first your metals need to me a required minimum Fineness (they can't be junk metal, they need to be almost pure). Just how pure do they need to be? Below is the required minimum fineness required for metals inside of an IRA.

Fineness Required

  • Gold .995
  • Silver .999
  • Platinum .9995
  • Palladium .9995

Another thing that is important to remember when investing in metals with your IRA is that they cannot be considered a collectable. They have to meet all of the above requirements and not be a collectable.
